Closing in on 5,500 high scores on letter or number! Pretty exciting for a small game
The This or That Championship Series kicked off in Milwaukee Thursday at the great social media bar AJ Bombers on Water. The event kicked off at 8pm with 6 players (The original World Series of Poker only had 8 players, and they gave out bracelets…so I figure we’re not doing to bad). Matt Stockton and I bowed out of the tournament to make it more competitive…but based on the scores logged, we may need to mix it up in future events.
The registered players for the event were a mix of first time players as well as players as the “I dabble” level. No players who were self-proclaimed “experts” were in the field so it was anyone’s game.
The tournament consisted of 3 rounds of competition.
Round 1: Everyone plays, up to 3 re-starts per game
Letter or Number – 15 seconds (Top score was 10,291 by Andy Shannon)
Dinosaur or Disease – hard – 30 seconds (Top score was 18,541 by Brandon Henak)
Hot or Heavy – 45 seconds (Top score was 22,728 by Monica Weber)
Country or Capital – World – 30 seconds (Top score was 14,718 by Andy Shannon)
Girl Name or Boy Name – 45 seconds (Top score was 30,700 by Monica Weber)
So after the first round, here were the standings:
1st place: Monica Weber – 90,567
2nd place: Andy Shannon– 87,457
3rd place: Luke Sparks – 77,227
4th place: Brandon Henak – 71,531
5th place: Timothy “Hot Stuff” Knutson: 69,093
6th place: Juliette: 58,793
After the first round, the top 10 players advance to the second. In this case, that was all registered players. In future events, this “cut” will be even more upsetting to the players that didn’t make it. Here, all players continued to the next round
Round 2: Top 10 players only, 0 Restarts
Hair or Hare – 30 seconds (Top score was 15,026 by Andy Shannon)
World Language or Programming Language – 45 Seconds (Top score was 16,998 by Andy Shannon)
City or State – US – 30 Seconds (Top score was 20,556 by Andy Shannon)
After the must faster and higher pressure round, here were the standings (scores do not carry over from previous rounds)
1st place: Andy Shannon– 52,850
2nd place: Monica Weber – 44,462
3rd place: Lukas Sparks – 43,393
4th place: Brandon Henak – 39,653
5th place: Timothy “Hot Stuff” Knutson – 33,860
6th place: Juliette – 23,546
The 3rd and final round only the top two players advanced. This lead to an all-or-nothing head to head and iPhone-to-iPhone showdown between the leader Andy Shannon and the challenger Monica Weber. Round 3 is a best of 3 game face-off to determine the champion.
The finalists took their positions, and after the first game (Musical Instrument or Surgical Instrument – 30 seconds) was announced, they clicked start at the same time and were off. While there was much profanity, after the last item was swiped, Monica Weber took the first round.
Monica leads 1-0.
With one more win, Monica will be the This or That Championship Series Milwaukee 2010 champion.
The next game announced was the ever-difficult Two Legs or Four Legs – 30 seconds pack.
The competitors touched iPhones and went after the game. When the dust settled, Monica Weber scored the solid victory, and thus won the first ever, This or That Championship Series Milwaukee 2010.
A brief award ceremony followed the event to recognize the following players:
1st place: Monica Weber with a 2-0 win over 2nd place
2nd place: Andy Shannon, the crowd favorite coming in, who couldn’t deliver in the head-to-head showdown.
The “Bad Beat” award: Luke “1,069 points short” Sparks, for narrowly missing the final.
Overall it was a great event at a fun venue and we want to extend our congratulations to Monica, Andy and all our players for a fierce, but sporting battle.

In the defense of Jane, Dinosaur or Disease is a difficult gamepack and a Dinosaur could have Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis…so I can see how it’s easy to get confused.
I’ll also note that I felt like a FBI agent blacking out names and profile images in the shot…it’s been redacted.
Happy friday everyone! Here’s a little tip: If a bar is empty, challenge the bartender to your favorite This or That pack (try a lateral thinking one like Hot or Heavy) , and get yourself a free shot.
